NOC letter (No Objection Certificate) for a visa explained
What a NOC letter is, who writes it, what to include, and when a consulate asks for one.
A No Objection Certificate (NOC) is a letter from your employer, school or family stating that they agree to your trip and expect you to return. Many consulates ask for an employment letter or a NOC as proof of ties.
Who writes it
- Employer: confirms your job, approved leave and that your job stays open.
- School or university: confirms you are a student and the trip is approved.
- Parent or guardian: for children, or when a parent is not travelling.
- Spouse: when a spouse is not travelling with you.
What it must have
- Company or institution letterhead, date, and contact details.
- Your full name, job title or programme, and passport number if requested.
- The dates and destination of the trip.
- The sign-off of an authorised person, with name, title, signature and stamp.
Check the official checklist
This guide is general information, not legal advice, and it does not guarantee a visa. Rules differ by country, visa type and consulate, and they change. Follow the checklist of the embassy or visa centre you apply to.
