Financial support letter and proof of funds for a visa

How to show you can pay for your trip: bank statements, a sponsor letter, income proof, and how much money is enough.

Consulates want to see that you can pay for your trip and your return. You can show your own funds, or a sponsor can pay.

Proof of your own funds

  • Bank statements for the last 3 to 6 months, stamped or in the bank's official format.
  • Salary slips and an employment letter.
  • For business owners: trade licence, tax returns and company statements.
  • Explain any large or sudden deposits.

If someone else pays

  • Ask them for a financial support (sponsorship) letter that names you, the dates, and what they pay for.
  • They attach their own bank statements, proof of income and a copy of their ID.
  • Show the family or other link between you.

How much is enough?

  • There is no single number. Some countries publish a daily amount per person, so check the consulate checklist.
  • Your funds should clearly cover the flights, accommodation, insurance and daily costs for the full stay.
Check the official checklist

This guide is general information, not legal advice, and it does not guarantee a visa. Rules differ by country, visa type and consulate, and they change. Follow the checklist of the embassy or visa centre you apply to.
